Moreton Steps Into Big Role in Year Two

Though the season is still young, members of the Skyhawks Men’s Basketball team have their work cut out for them.

Sitting in 5th place in the North East Division of the Northeast-10 Conference, the Skyhawks hold a record of 2-3 in conference and 3-5 overall.

Comparatively, last season through 8 games, the Skyhawks had a 4-4 record, though 2-3 in the NE-10.

Even with the loss of standout senior captains Ryan Logan and Jim Walsh, who both graduated in 2017, the Skyhawks seem to be keeping the pace with last year’s team.

Filling in in Logan’s absence has been sophomore forward Will Moreton, from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Logan, who averaged almost 18 points per game, was the Skyhawks leading scorer and an all conference selection his final 3 years at Stonehill.

Moreton has filled his shoes quite well, averaging 14 points per game through the first six games of his sophomore campaign.

“Ryan was such a dominant force… If I’m seen as being similar to Ryan that’s a tremendous compliment,” Moreton said.

The 6’6 sophomore, who is the small forward on the team, is averaging 6.2 rebounds per game this year, a boost from his 4.9 last year.

“It’s been a great opportunity and challenge for me to be able to play a big role on the team as an underclassman,” Moreton said.

Senior Captains Ryan Roach and Kenneth “KJ” Lee have also stepped up in the absence of their two predecessors.

Lee and Roach combine to average almost 19 points per game, a big contribution to the Skyhawks 81.8 average.

The 2017-2018 Skyhawks have won their two games by a combined 12 points while losing their 4 games in a combined 24 points.

“Our goal is for this team to not only make [NE-10] playoffs but to make it into the NCAA tournament,” Lee said.

With 3 of their next 5 games away from home against NE-10 opponents, the Skyhawks have a lot of work ahead of them if they want to right the ship from last year.

Last year the Skyhawks just barely missed the NE-10 tournament, ending up having their chances taken away in their final game of the season.

With the season still in its early goings, Coach Chris Kraus and his team have a long road ahead of them.

“As a team we want to make the NE-10 playoffs… once the playoffs start, anything can happen.” Moreton said.
