Stonehill Skyhawk Alumni Dominant in the German Football League

Skyhawk Alumni Dominant in the German Football League.

Two former Skyhawk football players, Justin Kaffenberger and Nathaniel Morris, have been dominating the German Football League.

“It’s every football players dream to go big and go professional… I knew I wanted to keep playing but did not know where to turn,” Kaffenberger said.

Nathaniel Morris, Class of 2015 and Justin Kaffenberger, Class of 2017, decided to take their skills to Germany after their careers at Stonehill ended, Morris to the New Yorker Lions of Braunschweig, Germany, and Kaffenberger to the Potsdam Royals.

This past season, Morris accumulated 21 touchdowns while playing in only 12 games, a total which landed him as the second best scorer in Europe’s top football league. Originally a cornerback for the Skyhawks, Morris made the transition to wide receiver this year and quickly asserted his dominance as one of the deadliest offensive weapons in the GFL.

Kaffenberger on the other hand has been a defensive powerhouse in his first season with the Royals playing safety and cornerback. Kaffenberger led the league with 13 interceptions, a new program record, and ended up second on the team in tackles with 85.

“I played well this season, but our team played amazing, going 16-0 and winning the championship,” Kaffenberger said.

As for the future, both players are ready to make some changes.

“Right now I am currently preparing for workouts with Canadian Football League teams to further my career,” Morris said

“I always felt I could play at a professional level if given the right opportunity,” Morris said. Going to the CFL, a much more popular and talented league, would give Morris a greater chance at extending his career to a potential National Football League team.

Kaffenberger’s future is in his own hands as well. Following his personal success as well as his team’s fantastic season, Kaffenberger has some choices to make.

“I have the option to go back and play with the same team for another season, but I am grateful for other teams showing interest in me as well,” Kaffenberger said.

Kaffenberger has more value in this league than most Americans. According to GFL rules, each team is only allowed two Americans on the field at one time. Fortunately, Kaffenberger’s father is originally from Germany, making Justin a “dual passport” player.

“I don’t count as an American because I was able to get a German passport along with my American one.” Kaffenberger said. This attribute adds a lot of value to an already skilled player.

Before their careers overseas began, Morris and Kaffenberger both were standout players for the Skyhawks.

Morris, originally from Providence, Rhode Island, had 10 interceptions in his career, enough to put him at 6th all time in Stonehill football history.

Kaffenberger, native of Monroe, New York, finished his senior season with 72 total tackles, 3rd best on the team that year.

The two players are in their offseason now with Morris looking forward to continuing his career in the CFL while Kaffenberger looks to continue his defensive dominance in Germany.
